BREAKING: ‘Seven football fans dead’ in stampede outside AFCON stadium during Cameroon match

Seven football fans have reportedly been killed in a stampede outside the Paul Biya Stadium which hosted the Africa Cup of Nations last-16 tie between Cameroon and Comoros.

One piece of video footage posted on social media showed terrifying scenes as tens of fans appeared to try and rush through the gates of the stadium all at once.

Another image appeared to show supporters lying on the ground, some of whom appeared unconscious.

Some eye witnesses reported seeing people trampled on during the melee.

Local media sources are reporting that seven people are dead and others are injured as a result of the stampede at the entrance to the stadium.

The report adds that those who were seriously injured were taken to the Messassi Hospital Center.

Despite the horrifying scenes outside the ground, the match between Cameroon and Comoros kicked off as scheduled at 7pm local time.

Comoros were not expected to mount much of a challenge after being forced to name an outfield player in goal following a series of positive Covid tests to their recognised goalkeepers.

And their task got even harder after just seven minutes in when former Millwall midfielder Jimmy Abdou received a red card for a poor challenge on Moumi Ngamaleu.

Cameroon took the lead not long after when Karl Toko Ekambi slotted past Comoros’ makeshift goalkeeper Chaker Alhadhur to make it 1-0.

The tournament hosts doubled their lead midway through the second half through Besiktas striker Vincent Aboubakar, who tucked home his sixth of the competition.

Comoros pulled a goal back through a wonderful free-kick from Guingamp midfielder Youssouf M’changama with nine minutes left on the clock.

But it wasn’t enough as Cameroon clung on to claim a 2-1 victory.
