Antalyaspor winger Shoya Nakajima was sent off just 20 seconds into his home debut on Saturday, with his horrified family watching on from the stands.
The 28-year-old star joined the Turkish club from Porto this summer and made his debut in their 1-0 reverse at Kayserispor last week – coming on as a substitute with eight minutes remaining. He had to be content with a place on the bench once more on Saturday as the Turkish Super Lig club welcomed Adana Demirspor to their home ground.
However, Nakajima managed to get on the pitch a little earlier than last weekend, coming on for Houssam Ghacha in the 59th minute.
With Antalyaspor 1-0 down and both sides already down to 10-men, the Japan international was keen to make a good first impression in front of his home fans. But that keenness spilled over into rashness moments after his introduction as Nakajima slid in on Demirspor star Jonas Svensson with a mistimed challenge.
Recognising the lateness of the tackle, Nakajima immediately held his hands up and apologised to Svensson. The referee dished out a yellow card to the former Porto man and that appeared to be that.
That was until VAR told the referee to consult his pitchside monitor, at which point Nakajima’s yellow was upgraded to a red and he was sent for the earliest of early baths, just seconds after entering the field of play.
As the winger received his matching orders, TV cameras panned up into the stands where members of the player’s family were seen watching on in disbelief, according to Japan Times journalist Dan Orlowitz.
While one of the entourage started biting her fingers, another couldn’t watch at all and covered her face with a handkerchief as the Antalyaspor midfielder left the field.
The incredible phase of play received plenty of comments on social media, including from one account that questioned whether it was the “worst debut in history.”
Someone else said: “What an entrance, was that his family watching on as well?” As a third person added: “First bloke to get shot in Squid games Red light Green light lasted longer.”
While a fourth commenter simply put: “An unforgettable debut!”
Nakajima’s sending off certainly didn’t help Antalyaspor, who went on to lose the match 3-0.
