On 7th April 2021, it was revealed that Jerome Boateng would be leaving Bayern Munich after ten years with the club.
Boateng left the German champions having made 363 appearances for the club, scoring ten goals in his stint in Bavaria. He won nine Bundesliga titles in ten seasons with the club, along with five German cups and 2 Champions League trophies.
However, Bayern have already signed his replacement in the form of Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig, leaving little option but for the veteran German to depart.
Lyon make their move
With Boateng still a free agent heading into deadline day, Lyon have pounced. As per the reliable Fabrizio Romano, the medical was conducted in the past hour, and he will join the club for the upcoming season.
Boateng effectively replaces fellow veteran defender Marcelo, who was banished to the reserve side following an outburst after the back of their 3-0 defeat to Angers.
Boateng, now 32 years old, will be the second World Cup winning defender joining the division this summer, following Sergio Ramos’ high profile switch to Paris Saint Germain earlier in the window.
With Lionel Messi, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Achraf Hakimi and Giorginio Wijnaldum also joining the division, and a potential move to Real Madrid seemingly unlikely for Kylian Mbappe, the division appears to be gaining more stars.
