Man United fans hail Erik Ten Hag for axing Cristiano Ronaldo

Manchester United fans have hailed Erik Ten Hag for axing Cristiano Ronaldo from their first team squad comparing his actions to Mikel Arteta’s battle with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at Arsenal.

Ten Hag promised to deal with the five-time Ballon D’or winner on Thursday, October 20 after Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford before full-time of their Premier League win over Tottenham.

With that fury stemming from a lack of game time, the 37-year-old is now said to have refused to come on as a substitute before the club confirmed he had been dropped.

A United fan account said: “This Ronaldo situation to me really feels like Ten Hag’s version of what happened with Arteta and Aubameyang at Arsenal where he took command and changed the direction of the club, gaining respect of his players at the same time, by making a stance.”

A second added: “Perfect move by Eric ten Hag and the club, no one is bigger than the club. Ronaldo should not come close to the first team unless he apologises to his team mates.”

A third wrote: “No player is bigger than the manager & certainly no player is bigger than the club. Good on Eric Ten Hag for standing his ground.”

A fourth agreed: “Ten Hag dropping (Harry) Maguire and dropping Cristiano Ronaldo for refusing to come on as a sub might be the biggest balls of United manager we ever seen since (Jose) Mourinho era.”

With fans left in the dark over what might happen to one of their greatest ever players, a short statement confirmed the strong stance of the club on Thursday evening.

It said: “Cristiano will not be part of the Manchester United squad for this Saturday’s game against Chelsea. The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture.”

Arteta’s decision to first strip Aubameyang of the club captaincy at Arsenal and then drop him from the squad completely and allowing him to join Barcelona was met with plenty of scepticism – but it hasn’t effected their fortunes negatively on the pitch.

Ronaldo didn’t appear against Tottenham as Fred and Bruno Fernandes found the target to give Ten Hag’s side a sixth win of the league campaign.

United fans will be hoping that their winning form continues without Ronaldo away to Chelsea on Sunday, after which they are in Europa League action against Sheriff.
